Using modern spatialisation techniques (e.g. binaural panning) we can give sounds a position allowing you to perceive where the sound is coming from in three dimensions surrounding you.
'8D Audio' is just a new term / buzzword to describe a simulated binaural effect, this is actually produced using HRTF filtering.
