Описание. Длина 19-20 см. В отличие от других представителей рода, окраска скромная: верх серый, низ беловатый, на темном крыле вьщеляются белые полосы, 3 крайние пары рулевых белые, остальные темные. На голове самца развита сложной конфигурации черная шапочка, контрастирующая с белым пятном на лбу. У молодых птиц на спине развит чешуйчатый рисунок, нижняя сторона имеет явный желтый оттенок. Голос — характерное, далеко слышное \«тирири, тирири\», издаваемое как в полете, так и в кронах. Единственный представитель семейства в России.
Долгое время вид объединяли с розовым личинкоедом (P. roseus), живущим в Китае и Южной Азии. На российском Дальнем Востоке появляется с зимовок поздно, в мае. Самцы занимают участки в кронах и подзывают самок, добавляя к характерной позывке свистовую песню. На границах участков самцы преследуют друг друга, дерутся. Очевидно, серые личинкоеды номадны, гнездятся в разных районах при сочетании благоприятных условий, значительная часть популяции не размножается. Птицы все лето держатся небольшими стайками, кочуют на обширных территориях. Сезон размножения продолжается все лето. Гнездовая биология изучена плохо, поскольку гнезда находятся высоко в кронах (от 5 м над землей), а птицы (особенно самка) у гнезда ведут себя очень скрытно. Самок иногда можно видеть даже в нижнем ярусе, где они собирают корм. Гнездо строит главным образом самка, снаружи постройка маскируется лишайниками, коконами пауков, используется слюна, цементирующая гнездовой материал. В кладке 4-5 яиц. Пик осеннего пролета приходится на середину сентября. Обычный вид.
Распространение. Восточная Азия от побережья Татарского пролива и Японского моря к западу до западных границ бассейна верхней Зеи (район станции Соловьевск) и Большого Хингана. К северу в бассейне Зеи до 54-й параллели, восточнее к северу предположительно до южного склона хребта Джагды и устья Амура. К югу в бассейне Сунгари до 44-й параллели, восточнее к югу до северной части Корейского полуострова. Острова: Хонсю, Окинава, Исигаки, Ириомоте. Предположительно острова Кунашир и Тайвань.

Зимует в Юго-Восточной Азии до Филиппин, Суматры, Борнео. В горы поднимается до 1700 м.
