Музыка вселенной Космическая птица Туманность чайка
Эти широко раскинувшиеся облака светящегося газа и пыли напоминают астрономам с планеты Земля очертания птицы. За свою форму туманность получила название Чайка.
Этот портрет космической птицы занимает на небе область размером 1.6 градуса вдоль плоскости Млечного Пути в направлении, близком к Сириусу – самой яркой звезде созвездия Большого Пса. Конечно, внутри этого облака есть и отдельные объекты, занесённые в каталоги. Например, туманность NGC 2327 – компактная и богатая пылью эмиссионная область, в которую погружена массивная звезда. Эту туманность, формирующую “голову” космической чайки, называют еще туманностью Попугай, на картинке она расположена выше центра. Объект IC 2177 создаёт широко раскинутые крылья чайки.
В этом сложном комплексе газовых и пылевых облаков доминирует красное свечение атомов водорода. Вся область имеет размер более 100 световых лет, а расстояние до неё оценивается в 3800 световых лет.
Красноватый оттенок снимка является характерным признаком присутствия ионизованного водорода. Туманность Чайка, формальное называемая IC 2177, объект сложной структуры, очертаниями напоминающий птицу, состоит из трех больших газовых облаков. Облако Sharpless 2-292 (eso1237) образует “голову”, Sharpless 2-296, часть которого показана на этом снимке, составляет широкие “крылья”, а Sharpless 2-297 – небольшое образование сложной структуры на кончике правого “крыла чайки”.
Все эти объекты входят в каталог туманностей Шарплесса, список более 300 светящихся облаков газа, составленный в 1950-х американским астрономом Стюартом Шарплессом (Stewart Sharpless). Во время создания этого каталога Шарплесс был аспирантом в Йеркской обсерватории близ Чикаго (США). Он и его коллеги вели наблюдения, которые показывали, что Млечный Путь представляет собой спиральную галактику с протяженными изогнутыми «рукавами».
Спиральные галактики могут содержать тысячи областей HII, которые почти всегда концентрируются вдоль спиральных ветвей галактики. Туманность Чайка лежит в одном из спиральных рукавов Млечного Пути. Такая закономерность выполняется не для всех галактик: например, неправильные галактики тоже содержат области HII, но там они разбросаны по всей галактике. Иначе обстоит дело и с эллиптическими галактиками, где, похоже, этих областей нет вообще. Присутствие областей HII свидетельствует о том, что в галактике все еще идут процессы активного звездообразования.
Это изображение Sharpless 2-296 получено с большой камерой Wide Field Imager (WFI), смонтированной на 2.2-метровом телескопе MPG/ESO в обсерватории ESO Ла Силья в Чили. В кадре лишь маленькая часть туманности, но в действительности этот фрагмент является огромным облаком, в недрах которого идут бурные процессы формирования горячих звезд. На снимке облако Sharpless 2-296 освещено несколькими особенно яркими молодыми звездами, но по объему туманности рассеяно еще много других звезд, в том числе выделяется одна исключительно яркая, которая в очертаниях всей туманности занимает место «глаза» птицы.
На широкоугольных снимках этой области неба можно увидеть множество интересных астрономических объектов. Молодые яркие звезды внутри туманности являются частью близлежащей области звездообразования CMa R1 в созвездии Большого Пса, полного ярких звезд и скоплений. По соседству с Туманностью Чайка лежит и Туманность «Шлем Тора», изображение которой было получено с Очень Большим Телескопом ESO (VLT) в 50-летнюю годовщину ESO 5 октября 2012 г. при участии Брижитт Байоль (Brigitte Bailleul), победительницы конкурса «Твитни свой путь на VLT!»
