Пёстрая лесная птица размером несколько меньше галки. Длина тела 32–35 см, размах крыльев 49–53 см, масса 120–200 г. Голова крупная, клюв длинный, прямой. Хвост сравнительно короткий, со светлой каймой, более широкой снизу. Общий фон оперения тёмно-бурый, с многочисленными белыми пятнами. В гнездовой период очень скрытная птица, чаще попадается на глаза во время послегнездовых кочёвок. Лесной вид, в основном перемещается по кронам деревьев, может прыгать по ветвям и подвешиваться под шишками ели при добывании из них семян.

Описание. Сходных видов нет. Самцы и самки не отличаются. У взрослых птиц окраска темно-бурая, с каплевидными белыми пятнами, более узкими на спине и плечах, более широкими и округлыми на груди и брюхе. На горле и шее пятна в виде штрихов. Шапочка черно-бурая, без пятен. Крылья и хвост чёрные, с зелёным отливом, без пятен. Вершина хвоста и подхвостье белые. Клюв и ноги чёрные. Глаза бурые. В Европейской России встречается 2 подвида, в достаточной степени отличающиеся внешне.

достигает длины около 20 см. Окраска его оперения на верхней стороне и по бокам оливково-зеленая, а на нижней стороне жёлто-коричневого цвета с тёмными точками на груди. Другие характерные признаки дрозда-отшельника – это его красноватый хвост и белые круги под глазами. Как и многие дрозды, эта птица красиво поёт.

Гнездится дрозд-отшельник в хвойных и смешанных лесах и лесистых горах Северной Америки, на зимовку же он мигрирует в Центральную Америку вплоть до Гватемалы.

часто кормится на земле, но может кормиться и на кустарниках и деревьях. Питается он в основном насекомыми: жуками, осами, мухами. Кроме того, дрозд поедает разнообразные плоды и ягоды. Зимой эта птица может кормиться в городских парках.

Во время тока самец занимает участок, на который может проникнуть только готовые к спариванию самки. Пара совместно строит компактное, массивное чашеобразное гнездо из растительного материала и тины. Часто оно располагается на дереве невысоко над землей или прямо на земле. В кладке от 3 до 6 яиц. Насиживает их только самка, а самец в это время приносит ей корм. Затем он помогает самке выкармливать птенцов, которые становятся самостоятельными примерно через 12 дней. После этого родители часто гнездятся во второй раз.
