Достаточно обычный и знакомый многим вид. Оперение самца чёрное с блеском, хвост длинный, клюв яркий жёлто-оранжевый. Самка однотонная серовато-бурая Молодая птица похожа на самку, но тон окраски скорее буровато-ржавый.
Распространение. Вид оседлый и перелётный, имеет около 15 подвидов в Евразии, на островах Восточной Атлантики и в Северной Африке. Был завезён в Австралию и Новую Зеландию. Европейский ареал в основном не заходит севернее 65° северной широты. Зимует на юге ареала, вплоть до Северной Африки. В Италии численность гнездящихся птиц составляет 2–5 миллионов пар, на пролёте и зимовке дрозды ещё более многочисленны.
Среда обитания. Типичный лесной обитатель, тем не менее хорошо приспособился к жизни в сельской и городской местности. Встречается в парках, садах, огородах, аллеях, лесных посадках, в кустарниковых зарослях в культурном ландшафте.
Песня очень звучная и красивая, состоит из чётких и разнообразных флейтовых свистов, звучит очень неторопливо, флегматично, не имеет определённой длительности. В отличие от певчего, чёрный дрозд не повторяет по несколько раз подряд одни и те же слоги. В отличие от песни дерябы, паузы неровные, многие фразы звучат слитно, песня звучнее, степеннее, ниже тоном, в минорных тонах. Поют много, наиболее активно — на зорях, сидя на вершине или в кроне дерева. Наиболее обычная позывка — «чак-чак...». Сигналы тревоги — то же «чак-чак», различные трески и др.
Распространение. Распространён на большей части Европы, а также в широкой полосе Азии от Средиземноморья до восточного Китая. Гнездовой ареал захватывает большую часть Европейской России, кроме севера лесной зоны и степного юга. На крайнем западе и на юге нашего региона чёрные дрозды осёдлы. На большей его части — перелётны, районы зимовки находятся в южной Европе, Закавказье, на Ближнем Востоке.
