В оригинале песня Jingle Bells имела другую мелодию. Она была впервые опубликована в 1857-м году американским композитором Джеймсом Лордом Пьерпонтом. Называлась она \«One Horse Open Sleigh\» (последняя строчка куплета про сани, в которые запряжена лошадка) и мелодия её была сложнее, больше напоминающая классические пьесы Моцарта. Кто переделал текст и мелодию Jingle Bells до того варианта, который мы все знаем, по сей день неизвестно.

Песня Jingle Bells сейчас неразрывно ассоциируется с Рождеством, хотя сама по себе никаких упоминаний о празднике не содержит и как рождественская автором не задумывалась: это просто весёлая зимняя песенка. Написана она была ко Дню благодарения (в США празднуется в четвёртый четверг ноября).

Песню записывали Гленн Миллер со своим оркестром (1941), её исполняли Френк Синатра, Луис Армстронг, Дюк Эллингтон, Нат Кинг Коул, Элла Фицжеральд и Бони М.

Классической записью стала пластинка Бинга Кросби, выпущенная фирмой Декка в 1943-м году. Она разошлась миллионами копий.

Песня чаще всего исполняется только с первым куплетом, в котором нет ничего конкретного, кроме рассказа о том как здорово кататься зимой на санях.

В оригинале, однако, присутствует ещё три куплета: во втором идёт речь о том, как рассказчик берёт с собой кататься девушку, но переворачивается на санях. В третьем он идёт гулять под снегом, падает на спину, и над ним насмехается другой джентельмен. В третьем все снова радостно катаются на санях на большой скорости.

Сейчас принято считать, что jingle bell в тексте песни — это название разновидности колокольчиков, и такие действительно есть: это шарики из листового металла, внутрь которых помещается дробинка. Такие часто использовались и используются в том числе для украшения саней на Рождество как более дешёвая альтернатива обычным колокольчикам.

Но историк Джеймс Фалд утверждает, что слово jingle в данном контексте это императивный глагол. То есть, на самом деле песня называется \«Звените, колокольчики\».

Песню, как и Рождество, любят и в Австралии. Но есть сложность: в южном полушарии конец декабря — это разгар жаркого лета. Никакого снега, никаких саней. Но песню поют, со специальным австралийским текстом. В нём главные герои в жаркий день катаются на ржавом австралийском автомобиле Холден Ют.
