Во многих старых изданиях фигурирует под названием Рыжая славка Erythropygia galactotes в семействе Славковых.
Характерная птица пустынь и сухих степей. Размером несколько больше воробья, с довольно длинным, слегка загнутым книзу клювом. Масса 20–30 г, длина тела 15–17 см. Примечательная манера поведения — задирание вверх полураскрытого хвоста.
Описание. Сходных видов нет. Общий тон окраски буровато-песочный, надхвостье и хвост ярко-рыжие, хвост длинный, сильно закруглённый (почти ступенчатый), на рулевых перьях, кроме средней буроватой пары, есть широкая вершинная белая и предвершинная тёмная полосы. Развиты светлая бровь, тёмная полоса через глаз, а также ус. Самец и самка окрашены одинаково, сезонные вариации окраски незначительны. Молодые похожи на взрослых, но в целом несколько более рыжие.
Голос. Песня красивая и сложная, птица исполняет её, сидя на вершине куста, или в невысоком токовом полёте. Позывки — «пикающие» и трещащие звуки.
